The Philadelphia 76ers are confident they will keep shooting guard Quentin Grimes, even though his restricted free agency hasn’t seen much action. They have ruled out any sign-and-trade deals for now.
Because many teams have limited salary cap space, the restricted free agency market is very quiet. This means the Sixers are basically competing against themselves to keep Grimes.
Grimes is a talented two-way guard who has improved his offense, especially his ability to create plays off the dribble. At 6-foot-5, he’s one of the few players on the team, along with Tyrese Maxey, who can attack the basket effectively.
He can also play small forward, allowing the team flexibility with lineups alongside players like VJ Edgecombe and Jared McCain.
Although fans are anxious about the slow negotiations, sources believe the Sixers and Grimes will eventually agree on a deal. Grimes wants a big contract, while Philadelphia is willing to wait and see how the market develops.
Other restricted free agents, like Jonathan Kuminga and Josh Giddey, are also waiting for deals as the market remains slow.
There are three possible outcomes for Grimes:
- The Sixers and Grimes agree on a contract before the offseason ends.
- Grimes accepts Philadelphia’s $8.7 million qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent next summer.
- A sign-and-trade happens, though this is unlikely since Philadelphia doesn’t want to pursue that option.
Grimes had a breakout season after being traded to the Sixers from the Mavericks. In 28 games, he averaged 21.9 points, shot 47% overall, and 37% from three-point range, along with 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
Many consider Grimes the team’s fourth-best player after Joel Embiid, Maxey, and Paul George. His role will be important if the Sixers want to compete in the tough Eastern Conference.
