In a conversation with reporters on Wednesday evening, following the selection of Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe as the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA Draft, Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey shared an optimistic update on Joel Embiid’s health status, reports Dan Gelston of The Associated Press.
Morey noted that Embiid, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this past April, is progressing well in his rehabilitation.
According to Gelston, the timeline for Embiid’s recovery appears to be aligning with the team’s training camp in late September, indicating that the Sixers are feeling positive about the trajectory of his recovery so far.
“He’s very engaged, attacking rehab,” said Morey. “Doing everything he can to be out there. He had a meeting with (the surgeon) this week. All things, to use a NASA term, are nominal. Things are going well and expected and we expect that to continue.”
In other words, Embiid is taking an active and committed approach to his rehabilitation and remains fully involved in the recovery process.
His recent consultation with the surgeon confirmed that everything is proceeding as planned, with no unexpected setbacks – hence Morey’s reference to NASA terminology, where “nominal” means everything is functioning within normal parameters.
This all points to a smooth recovery path, with confidence building that Embiid will be ready to rejoin the team by the start of training camp.
Embiid’s issues with his left knee began midway through the 2023–24 season, when he required surgery to repair a meniscus injury.
While he managed to return later that spring and even competed in the Olympics during the summer, the knee continued to trouble him with persistent swelling into the fall.
That ongoing discomfort caused a delay in his season debut, which didn’t come until November 12, and ultimately prevented him from regaining his usual rhythm and comfort throughout the 2024–25 campaign.
