The Philadelphia 76ers already boast a dynamic and youthful backcourt that includes emerging star Tyrese Maxey, their 2024 first-round pick Jared McCain, who shows considerable promise, and restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, a talented contributor in his own right.
Yet despite this solid core of guards, the Sixers showed no hesitation in deepening that group even further during Wednesday night’s NBA Draft, selecting another high-upside backcourt talent in VJ Edgecombe.
Daryl Morey, the team’s president of basketball operations, expressed confidence in the strength of this revamped guard rotation.
Speaking to The Athletic’s Tony Jones, Morey remarked, “I think we now have one of the best backcourts in the league. When you look at some of these teams that are successful, they all have multiple guards.”
In other words, Morey sees the depth and versatility of the Sixers’ guard lineup as a key ingredient for building a championship contender.
He views the modern NBA landscape, where playoff-caliber teams typically rely on a variety of skilled guards to create offense, defend multiple positions, and manage tempo, as a model the Sixers are following.
By adding Edgecombe to a group that already includes Maxey’s All-Star caliber talent, McCain’s upside, and Grimes’ two-way potential, the Sixers are doubling down on a multi-guard strategy that Morey believes is essential for sustained postseason success.
