The Phoenix Suns remain hopeful that Kevin Durant could reconsider joining the Minnesota Timberwolves, despite his reported reluctance. The Timberwolves are involved in trade talks with Phoenix, with offers potentially including Rudy Gobert or Julius Randle.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Jon Krawczynski, Minnesota does not want to alter its core roster significantly if Durant is unwilling to join. Sources say the key question is whether Durant might eventually embrace the Timberwolves as a landing spot.
NBA insider Shams Charania recently reported that Durant has “no desire to be in Minnesota.” The 36-year-old forward prefers destinations like Miami, Houston, and San Antonio. These teams have been in contact with Phoenix about a possible trade.
Durant’s business partner, Rich Kleiman, is involved in guiding discussions. The veteran’s $54.7 million expiring contract adds complexity to any deal. Phoenix aims to get the best return, regardless of Durant’s preferences.
Minnesota finished the 2024-25 season with a 49–33 record, reaching the Western Conference Finals before losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite this success, Durant does not view the Timberwolves as a preferred option, limiting their trade leverage.
The Heat are emerging as a strong contender. Insider Marc Stein notes Miami’s “legitimate pursuit” of Durant, with the team preparing a package that includes win-now assets and draft picks. Miami previously tried to acquire Durant at the trade deadline and resumed talks this offseason.
San Antonio also shows interest but is unwilling to part with key players like Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle or the No. 2 overall pick. The Rockets offer a young core and assets but remain behind Miami in Phoenix’s priorities.
Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists over 75 games last season. Despite Phoenix missing the playoffs, his production stayed consistent.
Toronto and Minnesota remain linked to Durant but are considered long shots due to his lack of interest and team positioning. Phoenix is expected to finalize a deal before the June 25 NBA Draft.
