Kyrie Irving and James Harden are the top free agent point guards heading into the summer of 2025. Both stars, now in their thirties, have player options for next season and are looking for longer-term contracts.

Irving holds a $44 million player option for 2025–26 that he must decide on by June 24. The Dallas Mavericks reportedly want to keep him under contract for three more years in a deal worth about $40 million annually. This approach could serve as a template for Harden’s next contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.

NBA insider Jake Fischer noted that Irving’s eventual agreement might establish the financial benchmark for Harden’s new deal. The Clippers, after letting Paul George leave without compensation, are expected to be active in the trade market once Harden’s situation is resolved.

Irving’s 2024–25 season ended early due to an ACL tear sustained on March 3 against the Sacramento Kings. Before the injury, he was averaging 24.7 points, 4.6 assists, and shooting 40.1% from three in 50 games. Despite the setback, the Mavericks seem interested in retaining him for the foreseeable future.

Harden re-signed with the Clippers in July 2024 on a two-year, $70 million deal. He posted strong numbers this season, averaging 22.8 points, 8.7 assists, and 5.8 rebounds across 79 games.

As both players approach new contracts, Irving’s deal could shape Harden’s next extension, especially given their similar contract situations and free agency status. The Clippers have salary flexibility after retooling their roster with multiple short-term signings following George’s departure.
