Mavericks forward Kessler Edwards, signed on a two-way contract, wasn’t initially expected to see much NBA action this season. However, a string of injuries in Dallas has pushed him into a crucial role in recent weeks.
The 24-year-old has started 13 of the Mavericks’ last 16 games, primarily filling in as a small-ball center.
He has performed admirably in this unexpected role, averaging 12.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks over his past six appearances while shooting an efficient .558/.556/.900.
Despite the adjustment, Edwards remains unfazed.
“I think just IQ is the main thing – learning how to play not only with these guys, but within the certain role they have me in,” he told Grant Afseth of Sportskeeda.
“Just knowing what to do with the ball, how to play in different ways, and learning how to make the right decisions on the floor.”
While Edwards has become a key contributor, time is running out on his NBA availability. He is just two games away from the 50-game cap imposed on two-way players.
The Mavericks can only convert his contract to a standard roster spot after April 10 due to salary cap constraints, limiting his eligibility for the remainder of the season unless a move is made.
“Honestly, I try not to think about that too much,” Edwards said about his looming limit.
“I’m just thankful for the games I’ve been able to play with this group. I’m just thankful for that opportunity.”
