Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas spoke about his impending free agency, expressing a desire to remain with the team despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.
“It’s a business, but at the end of the day, I would love to be back and get that straightened out,” Thomas said, per NBA insider Michael Scotto. “I want to keep playing in front of the fans and keep building the relationships I’ve built here because I was drafted here.”
Thomas, 23, is in the final year of his four-year, $10 million rookie contract and will become a restricted free agent this summer. His breakout season, in which he has averaged 24 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, has positioned him as one of the top young scorers on the market.
The high-scoring guard also spoke about his confidence in his abilities, stating, “When I got major minutes, I feel like I’ve been one of the best guards in the league at my position. When I do have the minutes in a featured role, the sky’s the limit for me, and we’ve seen that these past two years.”
Thomas’ free agency comes at a challenging time, as he is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a left hamstring strain suffered against the Chicago Bulls. Brooklyn, currently 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 22-45 record, has virtually no chance of making the postseason.
Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez praised Thomas’ impact on the team, emphasizing his scoring ability and work ethic. “Cam’s been great for the group. He’s worked every single day,” Fernandez said. “The way we played through him, I thought the team was playing at a high level.”
With the Nets preparing for a crucial offseason, Thomas’ contract situation will be a key storyline. Brooklyn must decide whether to make him a foundational piece or explore alternative roster moves.
