The Bucks have waived guard Cam Thomas, according to Shams Charania of ESPN, with the team later confirming the move.

Milwaukee made the decision in order to promote Pete Nance from a two-way deal to a multiyear standard contract, leaving Thomas as the odd man out.

The move comes as a surprise, as the Bucks had targeted Thomas following the trade deadline.

However, his minimum deal only covered the rest of the season, making him expendable if he wasn’t in their long-term plans.

Charania reported that general manager Jon Horst had previously presented Thomas as part of the team’s future, while head coach Doc Rivers compared him to former Sixth Man of the Year winners Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams shortly after his arrival.

There’s also a chance Thomas wanted a bigger role elsewhere. The 24-year-old averaged 16.6 minutes per game in Milwaukee, down from 24.3 in Brooklyn, and received two DNP-CDs last week.

He had also asked the Nets for a release before joining the Bucks. In 18 games with Milwaukee, Thomas averaged 10.6 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.6 rebounds.

If he clears waivers, the Bucks will carry a small dead cap hit and he’ll become a free agent, though he won’t be eligible for the playoffs.
