Big man Karlo Matkovic had a limited role early in the season, appearing in just six of the New Orleans Pelicans’ first 42 games.

However, his playing time has increased significantly in recent weeks, as he has participated in 13 of the last 15 games, including a stretch of nine consecutive appearances.

The 23-year-old had a standout performance in Sunday’s victory over the San Antonio Spurs, putting up a career-high 19 points on an impressive 8-of-9 shooting in just 21 minutes of play.

Additionally, he contributed six rebounds, further showcasing his all-around game.

After the game, Matkovic expressed his excitement about the opportunity to play more regular minutes, stating that he’s “embracing” the chance to contribute consistently for the Pelicans.

This opportunity to take on a larger role has allowed him to showcase his potential, and the team is likely encouraged by his growth and performance as they continue to navigate a competitive season.

“Being here, then (in the G League with) Birmingham, and then back and forth. Then getting minutes, not getting minutes,” he said, per Johnny Askounis of Eurohoops.

“I think that’s a part of the journey. The way it all started, drafted, stashed, working a way through, I think that’s the way it has to go.”
