The Detroit Pistons have decided to waive center Paul Reed, a move that frees up a roster spot and increases the team’s cap space by an additional $5 million.
This strategic decision positions the Pistons with a total of nearly $15.5 million in available cap space as the NBA trade season approaches, giving the team significant flexibility for potential acquisitions.
Reed, who was in the second year of a three-year, $23.5 million deal, had only a partial guarantee for this season. Of his $7.7 million salary, only $2.5 million was guaranteed, making it a financially advantageous decision for Detroit to part ways with the 6’9″ center.
By waiving Reed, the Pistons will be temporarily operating with a reduced roster. However, league rules require them to add a 14th player to their standard roster within 14 days to comply with minimum roster size regulations.
This development suggests Detroit is not only prioritizing financial flexibility but may also be eyeing opportunities to reshape their roster with more impactful or fitting players as they continue their rebuilding efforts.
