The New Orleans Pelicans have signed veteran guard Elfrid Payton to a contract, adding much-needed depth to their injury-depleted roster. The move aims to reinforce their backcourt, which has been significantly impacted by injuries to key players.

Payton, an experienced point guard, initially joined the Pelicans during training camp before being assigned to their G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron.

While he has not yet played for the Squadron this season, his familiarity with the organization and veteran presence make him a valuable addition during a challenging stretch for the team.

The Pelicans are currently without several crucial backcourt players, including Dejounte Murray, C.J. McCollum, Jose Alvarado, and rookie Jordan Hawkins.

The injury woes extend beyond the guards, with Zion Williamson and Herb Jones also sidelined for extended periods. Payton’s signing helps to fill the void left by these absences and provides the team with a reliable playmaker who can contribute immediately.

Last season, Payton showcased his skills in the G League with the Indiana Mad Ants, averaging 11.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game across 29 appearances.

A veteran with eight years of NBA experience, Payton has previously played for the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, and New York Knicks, in addition to a prior stint with the Pelicans.
