New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray is settling into his new team after an offseason trade from the Atlanta Hawks. His transition has been smooth, largely because he’s back playing his natural position as the point guard, which suits his skill set perfectly.
“In Atlanta, I was in the corner and on the wings, and I made the best of it,” Murray said. “Here, they are allowing me to play my real position. Playing point guard. Keeping everything organized. And making dudes better. And doing what I do best.”
Despite signing a four-year veteran extension that begins this season, Murray found himself involved in trade rumors for much of last year. His fit alongside Trae Young in a two-ballhandler system didn’t develop as the Hawks had envisioned, even though Murray adapted to the role.
The Hawks ultimately decided to part ways, and the Pelicans saw a chance to strengthen their backcourt, acquiring Murray in exchange for Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., Cody Zeller, E.J. Liddell, and two first-round picks.
For Murray, this trade is an opportunity for a fresh start and a return to the role where he excels. Being back in his natural position as a point guard allows him to do what he does best – organizing the offense, creating for others, and making his teammates better.
His impact has been felt early with the Pelicans, as he’s already proven to be a critical piece in their effort to compete in the highly competitive Western Conference.
With the Pelicans, Murray is now positioned to thrive, and the team hopes his leadership and playmaking can help them make a deep run this season.
