The Utah Jazz are reportedly seeking at least two first-round picks in exchange for center Walker Kessler, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Kessler, a rising star in the league after an impressive rookie season, has garnered significant interest from several teams.
Among them, the New York Knicks have shown persistent interest, having made multiple inquiries about Kessler before deciding to trade for Karl-Anthony Towns.
The Knicks had been pursuing Towns since the start of the offseason, viewing him as a key piece to elevate their frontcourt. Towns was added after a series of setbacks for the Knicks at the center position.
Isaiah Hartenstein, a valuable rotational big, signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder in free agency, leaving a gap in New York’s depth chart.
Compounding the issue, the Knicks are also without starting center Mitchell Robinson, who is sidelined until at least December due to injury.
With Robinson’s extended absence and Hartenstein’s departure, the Knicks have been scrambling to solidify their frontcourt rotation.
Although they ultimately acquired Towns, their interest in Kessler highlights the team’s focus on bolstering their interior defense and rebounding.
Kessler, known for his shot-blocking ability and defensive presence, would have been an ideal candidate to fill that void. However, Utah’s asking price of two first-round picks may have made negotiations difficult.
As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if the Jazz continue to explore trade possibilities for Kessler or if the Knicks pursue other options to reinforce their roster, particularly in light of their injury concerns.
