Rogers Communications has solidified its control over Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) by acquiring Bell’s 37.5% stake, marking a significant shift in the ownership structure of one of the largest and most influential sports and entertainment companies in North America. MLSE, the parent organization of several major Canadian sports franchises, including the Toronto Raptors (NBA), Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), Raptors 905 (NBA G League), Toronto FC (MLS), and the Toronto Argonauts (CFL), is also responsible for managing the Scotiabank Arena, the home venue for both the Raptors and Maple Leafs.
Before the acquisition, Rogers and Bell each held an equal 37.5% stake in MLSE, sharing ownership responsibilities. Now, with Rogers acquiring Bell’s stake for an estimated USD 3.48 billion, it brings Rogers’ total ownership to 75%, giving the telecommunications giant a controlling interest in the sports and entertainment conglomerate. This move will likely impact how MLSE is managed and may lead to strategic changes in its operations, including team management, marketing strategies, and future development projects related to sports and entertainment.
Larry Tannenbaum, who retains his 20% stake, continues to play a central role within the organization. As the principal governor of the Toronto Raptors and a key figure in MLSE’s leadership, Tannenbaum holds a significant influence on decision-making, particularly concerning basketball operations. His recent re-election as the chairman of the NBA Board of Governors reinforces his prominent standing within both the MLSE and the broader basketball community.
The acquisition strengthens Rogers’ position in the Canadian sports landscape and signals its long-term commitment to the success and growth of MLSE’s franchises and properties. As the landscape of sports ownership continues to evolve, the deal could also trigger further consolidation or partnerships within the industry. The increased stake may provide Rogers with greater control over broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, and the ability to leverage its media platforms to boost fan engagement across the various leagues in which MLSE participates.
