Joel Embiid, the center for the Philadelphia 76ers, has officially committed to representing Team USA in the 2024 Olympics.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Embiid communicated his decision to Grant Hill, the executive director of USA Basketball, on Thursday morning.
The confirmation came after a nearly hour-long meeting between Embiid and Hill in Fort Collins, Colorado, where the Sixers are currently holding their training camp.
Given that Embiid was born in Cameroon and holds citizenship in both the U.S. and France, he had the option to play for any of these nations.
Shelburne’s sources revealed that Embiid’s choice stems from his desire to contribute to Team USA reclaiming its position as the top nation in international basketball.
This decision follows Team USA’s failure to secure a medal at the recent World Cup.
