Luka Doncic discussed his defensive improvement, offensive rhythm and the Los Angeles Lakers’ championship ambitions after scoring 45 points in Sunday’s 131-125 victory over the Toronto Raptors.
Doncic also recorded 15 rebounds, six assists and five steals, continuing a run of four consecutive games with at least 37 points. Asked about his defensive reputation, the Lakers star acknowledged he was not among the NBA’s best defenders but said he had made progress this season.
“I’m not the best defender in the NBA. This year I really took a step forward,” Doncic said.
He added that outside criticism would continue, but his teammates recognized the improvement and its impact on the team. Doncic also discussed his decision to take charges, drawing three against Toronto after making it a point of emphasis.
The guard said he had not taken five charges in a season for several years and wanted to improve in that area. He noted that such plays do not always receive much attention, even though they contribute to the team.
Doncic said his offensive rhythm was improving after missing six or seven months of basketball. He was not concerned with individual production as long as the Lakers continued winning.
“I’m trying to find that rhythm and it’s getting better,” he said.
The Slovenian also addressed the increased physicality in the NBA, saying defenders have been allowed more contact over the past two seasons. He said players must adjust to how games are officiated and respond with the same level of aggression defensively.
Reflecting on last season’s finish, Doncic described the disappointment of seeing the Lakers’ championship hopes fall short. He recalled the team going 13-2 in March and feeling it had the roster to compete for a title, making the eventual ending particularly frustrating.
Sunday’s win improved the Lakers’ record to 5-2. Doncic will look to extend his scoring run when Los Angeles hosts the Miami Heat on Monday night.
