Steve Kerr details Yaxel Lendeborg’s rapid Warriors rise

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr praised Yaxel Lendeborg’s impact and outlined the rookie’s potential after he scored a career-high 37 points in Sunday’s 124-112 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kerr said Lendeborg was already producing despite still adjusting to the speed and tactical demands of the NBA. The coach expects the forward to improve as he gains experience recognizing defensive coverages and handling pick-and-roll situations.

“He really doesn’t know the NBA game yet,” Kerr said. “He’s so skilled and so talented that he’s making all kinds of plays out there.”

Lendeborg shot 13-of-19 from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point range, adding six assists. Kerr admitted the rookie’s ability to create and make pull-up three-pointers exceeded what he expected after watching him work out before the season.

“I didn’t expect what I saw tonight,” Kerr said.

The coach also praised Lendeborg’s response after what the rookie had described as the worst game of his life against the Lakers. Kerr said the player’s confidence and enthusiasm helped him move on without needing a conversation from the coaching staff.

“Five years ago, he was playing in junior college in Yuma, Arizona, and now he’s getting 37 in NBA games,” Kerr said.

Kerr said Golden State’s 124-point performance without Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Gui Santos demonstrated the team’s depth. The Warriors recorded 32 assists, with De’Anthony Melton and Brandon Williams combining for 38 points.

The coach credited the young players’ offseason work for the team’s offensive rhythm, pointing to their summer league preparation and workouts before training camp.

He also said Lendeborg’s emergence gives Golden State another option late in games, reducing the need for Curry to carry the entire offensive load.

Kerr also addressed Lendeborg’s late push for 40 points. He said the team lost its rhythm when players on the bench encouraged the rookie to take difficult shots instead of continuing the normal offense.

“The lesson is if you just keep playing, then you stay in rhythm,” Kerr said.

Kerr confirmed that Gui Santos would miss Monday’s game because of knee discomfort. The Warriors will host the Phoenix Suns on Monday night.
