Lakers legend James Worthy has weighed in on the evolving dynamic within the team, advocating for Anthony Davis to take the reins as the Lakers’ primary option.

Following Davis’ substantial three-year, $186 million contract extension, Worthy emphasized the significance of Davis’ role in the Lakers’ present and future.

As the 30-year-old forward secures his place in the team’s core, Worthy emphasized the importance of grooming Davis for the leading role.

“The fact that we know LeBron not going to be around that much longer, it is nice to have a player like AD. Someone you can go around and someone who I think should be the number one guy right now. I mean, LeBron is going to do what he does, we know that. With LeBron out of the picture, I think AD’s the guy and I think he will step up and answer the call,” Worthy said during an appearance on Spectrum SportsNet.

Worthy acknowledged LeBron James’ inevitable transition, marking Davis as the successor to lead the Lakers. While LeBron’s iconic influence will continue, Davis’ capabilities make him a prime candidate to assume the central role within the team’s lineup.

Davis’ impact during the 2022-23 season was undeniable, with an average of 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game in 34 minutes of play.
