Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom weighed in on the news that Brittney Griner was released from a Russian prison in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout.
While saying that he is happy to see the WNBA player coming back home to the United States, Freedom wanted about the danger of making such prisoner swaps.
“By trading prisoners like this, it incentivizes regimes like #Russia, #Iran and #China to continue to take hostages and arbitrarily detain people based on their nationalities. That makes Americans less safe!” he tweeted.
“We have to be careful not to normalize state sponsored hostages and arbitrary detentions; this isn’t okay and it’s troubling how it’s becoming normalized in international relations. We need other tools in our toolkit beyond doing swaps like this going forward,” he added in another tweet.
