Hawks survive Cavs to snap skid 114-111

The Atlanta Hawks survived the Cleveland Cavaliers, 114-111, to end their three-game losing streak on Thursday night.

The Hawks improved to a 3-3 win-loss record, while the Cavs are now 3-2.

Donovan Mitchell cut the cushion to one on a driving layup with 20.6 seconds left. Nickeil Alexander-Walker made two free throws with 15.3 left to regain a three-point lead.

Mitchell got two potential tying looks off on the final possession, but misfired on both.

Alexander-Walker led the Hawks with 25 points, while Aaron Wiggins scored 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting off the bench.

On the other hand, James Harden dropped 24 points, while Mitchell added 22 points for the Cavs. Sam Merrill sank 4 of 8 from beyond the arc.

The Cavaliers started a 15-point first-quarter lead, and Atlanta has trailed by at least 15 points for the fourth consecutive game.

Meanwhile, Atlanta’s 16 first-quarter points were its lowest mark for any period so far this season, but it quickly turned the tables by forcing the Cavaliers into its joint-lowest-scoring quarter of the season with also 16.

The Hawks rallied with a 19-2 burst in the second, flipping a 35-24 deficit into a 43-37 lead.

Both teams will play road games on Saturday night: the Cavaliers visit Milwaukee, while the Hawks visit New Orleans.
