Bucks’ superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is commonly called The Greek Freak, referring to the country he was born in. However, it is often forgotten that he was born to Nigerian immigrants. Recently he was asked about the nickname.
“It doesn’t bother me, but people don’t call me The Nigerian Freak. They only call me The Greek Freak. This is a time for people to understand that I’m both. I’m both. I’m not just Greek, I’m Nigerian,” the two-time NBA MVP said on ESPN’s NBA Today.
“You cannot choose the nickname that people give to you, but what I can tell the people is that I was born and raised in Greece, understand the Greek culture, I speak the language, I know the history, but at the end of the day I know exactly the same things for the Nigerian culture and I’m not just one thing. You cannot tell me what I am.”
