Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving is thinking about suiting up for Australia’s national team at London 2012.

The number one pick in the 2011 NBA Draft was raised in New Jersey – but born in Melbourne – giving him duel Australian/American citizenship.

Irving was not selected in the preliminary 20-man USA roster for the upcoming Olympics, and has since been weighing up his options to play for the country of his birth.

The 19-year-old is aware that if he plays for the Aussies in London, he will no longer be eligible to represent the United States.

“It will be a long term decision, and I’m hoping to know in the next month or so,” Irving told NBA.com.

“Honestly, it’s going to be a process if I decide to play for Australia. A lot of things have to do with FIBA and Australian lawyers, but I’m not ruling out that possibility of playing with the Australian team,” he added.

Duke and USA coach Mike Krzyzewski is aware that Irving might be in a green and gold uniform come July 29th when the men’s Olympic tournament begins.

Krzyzewski coached Irving last season at Duke in the rookie’s only season in the NCAA.

“Either way, I know he’s going to make a pitch for me playing on the U.S. team when I see him,” Irving said. “We’ll see how it goes.”
