The Brooklyn Nets brought in two NBA superstars this summer in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Instantly the Nets appeared high on the favourites’ list for the coming season. Two-time NBA champion Kenny Smith thinks that even without Durant the Nets should be contending for the Eastern Conference title.

Kenny Smith said at the SkySports conference during the NBA Crossover event in London, per NetsDaily.

“Brooklyn should be better – that’s the expectation. Even without Kevin Durant there, they should be contending for the East.

“Basketball is a team sport like no other. If you look at Toronto last year, it wasn’t a duo that bought them the title. There was a really great player in Kawhi Leonard with really good players around him that understood how to play well. That structure is always going to be more consistent than two guys or three guys dominating because that becomes too much weight to carry.”

The Nets exceeded expectations in the 2018-19 season, and made the playoffs, with a 42-40 record as the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference. They went on to lose to the Philadelphia 76ers in five games in the first round.
