Two of the biggest talents of their generation, Donatas Motiejunas and Alexey Shved met each other for the first time after their first acquaintance in the final of the 2006 Junior Tournament held as a side event of the Final Four in Prague.
Both players were rather bad in that final game, as was the game itself, but if we has to declare a winner, this would have to be Alexey Shved, simply because his team won the tournament with 59-55.
17-year old Alexey was a cornerstone for his team averaging 14ppg, 6rpg, 7.3apg, 1.5spg in 27.5mpg overall in the tournament and was already a regular in scouting reports. Against Zalgiris however he was just 1/14 from the floor which probably also cost him the MVP honours of the tournament that went to his teammate Ivan Nelyubov.
The surprise of the tournament however came from Zalgiris and 15-year old Donatas Motiejunas, the 12th man in the rotation of his team and previously uknown. In the semifinal against Barcelona he came to the game in the second half to effectively lead his team to victory, scoring 10 points and being positive in every aspect of the game. A performance that really turned the heads of scouts.
Motiejunas' performance in the semifinal earned him extended minutes in the final game which were disastrous however as he looked lost on the floor.
Today the situation is reversed. It was Donatas Motiejunas who left the floor victorious in the game of Dynamo Moscow vs Benetton Treviso, for the third gameday of the Eurocup. Benetton won the game in Russia with 74-86.
The Lithuanian 7-footer had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists, starting for his team and playing 21:28 minutes. Shved did not start for Dynamo, saw however 25 minutes, enough time for him to score 16 points and grab 8 rebounds.
The back then scouting focus, Alexey Shved, is projected to be a borderline first-round pick in his last chance to take part in the draft, in the summer of 2010. On the other hand, nearly 2 years younger Motiejunas, is projected to be a definite lottery pick whenever he decides to enter the draft.
