"By Christmas we will have a new coach" said the President of the Slovenian Federation. And so it is: the Slovenian Basketball Federation announced the agreement with Memi Becirovic who is currently with Base Oostende.
Becirovic agreed on a 1+1+1 deal and will most likely leave Oostende at the end of the season. First reactions by Slovenian press and fans were not the most enthusiastic ones as many expected that the Federation would try aproaching Tomo Mahoric who was Jure Zdovc' assistant coach in the recent Eurobasket, where Slovenia captured fourth place, their highest ever.
"Time will show if this is the right decision. I can't talk yet about the success in the future. We will see how we will do on WC in Turkey. I am sorry that Jure Zdovc left us. We had a great chemistry together but this is also a great basis for future work, that's why I regret his decision but on other hand I respect it. Whoever would be picked for coach of the NT would have a hard job to be better
than him. It is hard to step into the shoes of a coach after such achievement. Coach Becirovic will definatly have a very difficult job." said Matjaz Smodis.
"Memi was my coach in youth categories when I was in Maribor. I didn't play for him as a senior or against his team. I know him as a person because I am a great friend with his son Sani. He is a very open person who is always prepared to talk and listen. I like that. He listens to the players. He has a feeling how to talk to a person. I will definatly accept his call to the national team. I said
many times that the coach is no problem for me. The most important thing for me is that I am healthy and not tired, especially in my mind." said Bostjan Nachbar.
