Slovenia’s coach Aleksander Sekulic shared insights on Luka Doncic’s form ahead of EuroBasket 2025. He spoke with Meridian Sport about the team’s preparations and challenges.

Doncic is in top physical shape. “Luka has changed his approach,” Sekulic said, noting his rigorous offseason training.

However, Sekulic cautioned that Doncic isn’t at his peak. “He’s just started basketball training; he’s not the real Doncic yet,” he explained.

The coach highlighted Doncic’s motivation to shine for Slovenia. “Luka’s here to do something great,” Sekulic said, expecting him to elevate teammates.

Slovenia faced setbacks with Vlatko Cancar and Josh Nebo’s absences. Their club, Olimpia Milano, blocked their participation, disrupting plans.

Sekulic expressed frustration over Cancar’s situation. “He was in great shape, but his club said he failed a medical test,” he noted.

Nebo faced similar issues, despite being healthy. “His club didn’t allow him to play,” Sekulic said, citing injury recovery concerns.

These absences hit Slovenia’s limited player pool hard. “Losing NBA and EuroLeague players is a big blow,” Sekulic admitted.

Still, Sekulic sees opportunity in adversity. “We must use this to motivate younger players,” he said, embracing the underdog role.

The coach compared Doncic to Nikola Jokic, calling them the world’s best. “Luka makes everyone better,” he said, boosting team confidence.

Sekulic reflected on Slovenia’s 2017 EuroBasket gold. “It was a tough journey, but chemistry and preparation aligned,” he recalled.

He acknowledged the pressure of high expectations. “You’re a target now, not an underdog,” Sekulic said, citing recent struggles.

Slovenia faces France, Iceland, Belgium, Israel, and Poland in Group D. Their EuroBasket campaign starts August 28 in Katowice.

Sekulic named Serbia as the top favorite, led by Jokic. “They have an incredible roster and coach,” he said. He also warned that other national teams, including France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Latvia, and Lithuania, remain formidable opponents.

Still, he warned that upsets are common. “One ball can change everything in EuroBasket,” Sekulic emphasized.

Doncic’s 31-pound weight loss has transformed his physique. His offseason regimen focused on strength, agility, and recovery.

Sekulic believes Doncic’s leadership will shine through. “He’ll help us exceed expectations,” the coach predicted.
