Sergio Scariolo is close to his first full-time coaching job in the NBA, as he is ready to join the Toronto Raptors as an assistant coach.

According to David Camps of the Spanish radio Onda Cero, the Italian coach will meet with the president of the Spanish Federation, Jorge Garbajosa, to inform him of his decision and terminate his contract with the Federation.

For their part, the Raptors had interviewed Sarunas Jasikevicius for the head coach position earlier in the summer, while Andrea Trinchieri also was one of the candidates to become an assistant coach.

In the end, though, Toronto decided to hire Scariolo, who has led Spain to three EuroBasket gold medals (2009, 2013, 2015), the silver medal in the 2012 Olympic Games  and two bronze medals in the 20016 Olympic Games and the 2017 EuroBasket, respectively.

Garbajosa now needs to search for Scariolo’s replacement, as the second round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers starts in September.
