Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos has taken to social media to announce his side’s departure from the EuroLeague.

While the facts are currently quite vague, the annual meeting with the EuroLeague and its member clubs, which featured the outspoken owner reportedly asking the fellow teams to vote lifting his current ban from being present in EuroLeague venues.

Instead, the teams unanimously voted to continue Giannakopoulos’ suspension which is due to expire in June.

The EuroLeague press release stated that Giannakopoulos requested the other ECA Shareholders present to instruct the Euroleague Basketball CEO to amnesty the arena prohibition sanction that is currently in place.

However, despite the request, the other teams denied it leaving the Panathinaikos owner backed into a corner that he could not get out of and he stormed out of the meeting, later posting on Instagram that Panathinaikos will return to FIBA-backed competitions, stating that they should have been where basketball always was.
