Former NBA player Kwame Brown has criticized Bronny James’ place in the NBA, arguing that LeBron James’ son received an opportunity that could have gone to another aspiring professional basketball player.
Brown, who was selected first overall in the 2001 NBA Draft and has frequently faced criticism over his own career, questioned whether Bronny would have reached the league without his father’s influence.
“It’s mind-blowing how somebody lost a job to that.”
The former Washington Wizards forward suggested that another young player who had worked toward an NBA career may have missed out on a roster spot because of Bronny’s selection.
“Some kid that worked their butt off that really feel like they could have made the NBA, they lost their job to that.”
Bronny was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, creating an opportunity for him to play alongside his father.
His selection generated considerable debate, with critics questioning whether his performance justified an NBA opportunity and supporters pointing to his potential for development.
Brown believes Bronny’s family connection is the primary reason his place in the league has been accepted.
“And the only reason why everybody’s okay with it is because of his father.”
The former NBA center also acknowledged that his comments could be interpreted as criticism motivated by personal feelings, but maintained that he was raising a legitimate concern about opportunities for other players.
“That’s a shame what we actually are seeing. Call it hate, call it whatever you want. To me, it’s a shame.”
