Klay Thompson could have an advantage in the competition for the Miami Heat’s final starting position because of his proven three-point shooting, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.
Thompson joined Miami after reaching a buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks during the offseason.
The veteran guard brings significantly more long-range experience than anyone else on the Heat roster, ranking fourth in NBA history with 2,899 made three-pointers.
His shooting could be particularly valuable alongside Miami’s projected starters Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell.
With several players who are most effective attacking inside the arc, Thompson’s ability to stretch the floor could provide additional space for the offense.
Miami reportedly viewed Thompson as a strong fit for that role throughout much of the offseason and was prepared to wait until he became available following his departure from Dallas.
Tim Hardaway Jr. and Pelle Larsson are expected to provide Thompson’s primary competition for the starting shooting guard position.
Hardaway showed last season in Denver that he can contribute effectively from the bench, while Larsson has experience playing both as a starter and reserve during his first two NBA seasons.
Thompson’s combination of experience and elite career three-point production could ultimately make him the preferred option when Miami determines its starting five.
