J.R. Smith turned part of the celebration surrounding Cleveland’s 2016 NBA championship into a memorable personal purchase, using his title-related check to buy a Ferrari F12.
The Cavaliers received $2,656,422 from the NBA playoff pool after defeating the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals.
Smith said his share helped him acquire a car that remains particularly meaningful to him.
“My favorite lady, I still got her, is my championship car. That’s what I bought with my check. F12 Ferrari. Red junk, gold rims, got them red screws on that thing. That’s my lady right there.”
Rather than treating the Ferrari as just another expensive car, Smith developed a strong attachment to it.
The red F12 with gold rims became his “championship car,” directly connecting it to one of the biggest achievements of his NBA career.
Smith even jokingly refers to the Ferrari as his “mistress,” something he said has become a running joke between him and his wife.
“My wife, she be getting jealous cause I tell her that’s my mistress. She be like, ‘Where you going?’ I’m like, ‘Going out with the fellas.’ ‘You taking your mistress with you?’ ‘You know it.’ Crack that joint up… that’s my baby.”
