Few players embody New York basketball culture more than Jose Alvarado, according to a feature by Jeanette Settembre of the New York Post.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Alvarado has become a fan favorite thanks to his toughness, energy, and connection to the city. Those who have known him since his early years say he has remained grounded despite reaching the NBA.

“Everything about him screams New York. He’s a lovable kid,” said former high school coach Joe Arbitello. “He comes back [to Christ the King High School] a lot. I don’t think he understands he’s a celebrity celebrity.”

The story also highlights the challenges Alvarado faced on his path to the league. At one point, he became discouraged and questioned whether an NBA career was realistic.

“He comes to me and says, ‘Dan, can you connect me to a trainer? Because I’m not going to make the NBA,’” youth coach Dan Klores recalled.

That doubt eventually turned into one of the most emotional moments of Alvarado’s career. Klores remembered the guard’s reaction after receiving his NBA opportunity with the New Orleans Pelicans.

“He broke down in tears. He couldn’t stop crying,” Klores said.
