Despite another strong overall performance from Karl-Anthony Towns, one issue has become increasingly noticeable during the NBA Finals: his lack of production in the fourth quarter.
Towns has yet to score in the final period through the first three games of the series, a surprising development given how effective he has been for much of the matchup against San Antonio.
Knicks head coach Mike Brown acknowledged the concern and said the responsibility falls in part on the coaching staff to keep Towns involved offensively.
“It’s extremely important that he’s getting touches, that he’s involved, not just in the fourth quarter, but obviously throughout the ballgame,” Brown said.
“I got to continue trying to do a better job of getting him involved throughout the course of the game, as well as late.”
New York appeared to move away from Towns offensively in Game 3, and the team’s offense struggled for stretches as a result.
Former NBA champion Danny Green noted that Towns was less aggressive than in earlier games, particularly when matched up against smaller defenders.
According to Green, Towns was not attacking mismatches in the post as frequently and instead spent more time away from the basket.
While the presence of Victor Wembanyama creates additional challenges around the rim, Green believes Towns must look to impose himself offensively more often as the series continues.
