The Philadelphia 76ers have promoted assistant general manager Jameer Nelson to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, according to ESPN sources.

Under newly hired president Mike Gansey, Nelson will serve as the franchise’s No. 2 basketball executive.

A Philadelphia native and former NBA All-Star, Nelson has been part of the 76ers’ front office for several years and will now take on a larger role in basketball operations, including helping oversee roster decisions and the team’s overall direction.

The promotion is one of the first major organizational moves since Gansey was hired as president of basketball operations, strengthening the team’s leadership structure heading into the upcoming season.

The 76ers are also keeping another key executive in place, as assistant general manager Prosper Karangwa has agreed to a multiyear contract extension.
