James Harden is expected to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a new multi-year contract this offseason, according to ESPN sources.

While a formal agreement cannot be completed until free agency opens, both sides reportedly already have an understanding to work toward a long-term deal.

Cleveland acquired Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline after the veteran guard sought greater contract security.

The Clippers had not committed to Harden’s $42 million team option for next season, leading his representatives to explore teams willing to offer longer guarantees.

Because Harden possessed veto power over any trade, there was reportedly mutual interest between him and Cleveland before the deal was finalized.

A new contract with a reduced annual salary over more guaranteed seasons could also help the Cavaliers manage their payroll under the NBA’s second-apron restrictions.
