As part of the NBA’s ongoing investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard, differing perspectives have surfaced regarding the legitimacy of Leonard’s endorsement agreement with Aspiration.

While Aspiration co-founder Andrei Cherny has defended the deal as a standard business arrangement, several former senior executives from the company have raised concerns about its structure and purpose.

“The team expressed concerns at the time regarding the high cost of the arrangement and its lack of alignment with Aspiration’s brand and business strategy,” they said.

“In our judgement, the Leonard Deal was not in the company’s best interest. It was strategically difficult to justify then, and it remains so today.”

Those conflicting accounts have become a key part of the league’s review as it continues to examine whether the deal had any connection to potential salary cap circumvention.
