Former NBA guard Malcolm Brogdon is returning to the University of Virginia, taking on a role as a strategic advisor for the men’s basketball program, the school announced.
Head coach Ryan Odom said the team is “thrilled” to welcome back the former All-American and ACC Player of the Year in this new position.
“I am honored to be a part of this new era of UVA basketball,” Brogdon said. “I know this is a new role, but I see myself jumping right in and being a resource for the players, coaches, and the entire basketball program.
“I’m excited to return to a place I consider home in what I’m sure will be a meaningful experience for myself and the program.”
Brogdon’s move follows a recent trend of NBA players taking roles with their former colleges, though unlike others, he is no longer playing after retiring last October following a preseason stint with the Knicks.
A four-year standout at Virginia, Brogdon earned All-American honors and was named ACC Player of the Year in 2016. His No. 15 jersey has since been retired.
He went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year in 2017 with Milwaukee and Sixth Man of the Year in 2023 with Boston, finishing his career with averages of 15.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds across nine seasons.
