Toronto Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic praised his team’s resilience after Sunday’s 119-108 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Scotiabank Arena.
He highlighted rebounding as a key factor in the win. “One thing that we did really well…was rebounding and that really translated in a game today against the team that’s like an outstanding rebounding team. We were able to win that battle…we got 20 offensive rebounds. That was huge.”
Rajakovic emphasized the team’s competitive spirit despite early struggles from beyond the arc. “First half we went three for 17 from the three-point line…but we just kept fighting, finding the ways, and all the guys that played tonight contributed to the big win.”
The coach noted Toronto’s composure in the fourth quarter. “When business got back within five…you can see the Raptor team didn’t get shaken up like it had maybe earlier in the season. I think that’s the growth of this team as a group.”
Key individual performances were recognized. “Scottie [Barnes] was outstanding tonight…plugging in in the paint. I thought he did an outstanding job. Jak [Poeltl] was a big night for him…how he rebounded and kept us settled.”
Rajakovic also praised RJ Barrett’s defensive development. “There is absolutely nothing that’s preventing him to be a lead two-way player…he’s showing grit and mindset of doing it over and over again, and that’s really helping the team to win.”
Barnes reached 100 blocks this season. “His impact on defense, basketball smarts, and competitiveness is out of this world…to get that many blocks at 6’8”, 6’9” is very unique.”
On game preparation, Rajakovic added, “We really wanted to set the tone with our physicality…plays from the start are what set the tone for the game…we have outstanding respect for Detroit. They’re a championship-caliber team.”
He discussed improving the team’s half-court pace. “Pace is better, but it’s not close to where it needs to be…we’re focusing on being able to go from one action to another and not allow teams to be physical with us.”
Rajakovic credited Toronto’s composure in the third quarter for creating momentum. “Our guys really wanted to compete with each other…they kept going and focused on the next play. That’s the mentality we need to carry forward.”
The Raptors received balanced contributions across the roster, with Brandon Ingram scoring 34 points, RJ Barrett adding 27, Poeltl posting 21 points and 18 rebounds, and Barnes contributing 14 points and 10 boards. Detroit’s Cade Cunningham had 33 points and nine assists, while Tobias Harris and Jalen Duren also reached double figures.
Toronto will travel to face the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday, while Detroit heads to Washington.
