Ja’Kobe Walter is beginning to carve out a clear role for himself with the Toronto Raptors, according to Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca.
The 2024 first-round selection entered the NBA known primarily for his scoring ability after leading Baylor in points during his only collegiate season.
However, Walter understands that establishing a long-term place in the league requires contributing in multiple areas, particularly on defense.
As he adjusts to the professional level, Walter has embraced a defensive-minded identity, something he says became more intentional once he arrived in Toronto and received feedback from the organization about how his physical tools could translate to success.
“I was always a defender, but I didn’t know I was going to be aiming towards being the main guy,” Walter told Grange.
“When I got here, they were telling me that they see the length and tools that I have, and just make sure I use them all the time. When I got to Toronto is when I really started focusing and realizing that I wanted to be the stopper type guy.”
Although Walter stands 6’4″ and weighs 180 pounds, slightly undersized for a traditional shooting guard, his 6’10” wingspan helps compensate, allowing him to disrupt opponents and apply strong pressure on the ball.
Grange notes that his defensive intensity and activity level have already stood out, giving the Raptors a versatile perimeter option.
Offensively, Walter’s long-term development may hinge on his perimeter shooting consistency.
The 21-year-old has connected on 35.3% of his three-point attempts this season, showing encouraging signs that he can space the floor while continuing to grow defensively.
Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic praised Walter following Thursday’s win in Chicago, highlighting both his defensive effort and overall decision-making.
According to Rajakovic, Walter’s performance is steadily building confidence within the team and coaching staff.
“I thought he played a very good game. I thought he did an outstanding job defensively. I thought he was in the right spots on offense, took the right shots,” Rajakovic said. “There is a growing confidence inside this group that he’s ready for this challenge.”
