The Boston Celtics extended their Eastern Conference surge with a 111-89 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena, with Jaylen Brown leading the charge with 32 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
“Atmospheres like this get you motivated. Rivalry goes back well before I was born. To come out and compete and get a W is always a good atmosphere, and it feels better when you get a win,” Brown said, reflecting on the historic Celtics-Lakers rivalry.
Brown explained the early-game adjustments Boston had to make against Los Angeles’ defensive schemes. “They play zone like probably the whole first quarter, maybe the first half, trying to throw our rhythm off. It took a bit to get settled, but once we got comfortable, we were able to open up the game,” he said.
He credited the team’s defensive focus for sustaining their performance. “Just set the tone on defense. Coming out that’s what we want to do. Hugo made some big plays, Baylor was amazing. Defense is what we got to continue to elevate along with offense,” Brown said.
On offensive strategy, Brown emphasized pace and transition. “Just play with pace, try to get them to play both ends. They wanted to slow the game down, that’s why they went zone. We opened up the game by scanning, knowing when to attack and when to let things develop,” he added.
Brown also responded to LeBron James’ recent praise regarding his MVP case. “Just come out and play. It’s a long season, still 27 or 28 games left. Don’t let praise or criticism make or break you. I play both ends night to night, help lead my team, and try to win every single night,” he said.
Reflecting on past interactions with James, Brown recalled, “When I first got into the league, my first start was against the Cavaliers. After the game, he came up to me and said, ‘You’re going to be an all-star one day, you’re going to be a great player.’ At the All-Star game, he smiled and said, ‘I’m not surprised at anything you’re doing right now.’”
Brown highlighted the impact of reserve guard Payton Pritchard. “It shows his humility. Payton has caught fire this second part of the season. He’s playing at an all-star level. I’m happy to see it. We find ways to trust him and allow him to run the show,” Brown said.
Boston controlled the boards 50-39 and shot 48% overall, with Brown and Pritchard scoring 19 points each after halftime to secure a comfortable second-half lead. The victory keeps the Celtics within reach of Detroit for the top spot in the East.
Next, Boston travels to face the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday, while Los Angeles returns home to host the Orlando Magic.
