Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla highlighted his team’s defensive execution following their 111-89 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena. The Celtics limited a trio of 20-plus-point scorers, including a 30-point contributor, and Mazzulla credited his team’s disciplined approach.
“Yeah, I mean, you’re never going to stop them. I think it’s just leveraging what you can live with and what you can take away,” Mazzulla said. He emphasized Boston’s ability to minimize easy opportunities: “We had 14 turnovers, but I think eight of them were dead ball turnovers, so they can’t get leak outs. They can’t get transition threes.”
The Celtics forced the Lakers to just one dunk, well below their season average of five. Mazzulla also praised his squad for controlling the boards: “Credit to the guys for rebounding… they’re so good that it just tests your discipline. I thought the guys did a good job of that throughout the game.”
Mazzulla pointed to the influence of leadership and role clarity in fostering strong defensive efforts. “It starts with the leadership and the empowerment of the guys… any great team has great role definition. For us to be great, we have to have those guys impacting the game at a high level on the margins,” he explained.
He also discussed his trust in younger players, noting their ability to handle full-court defensive pressure. “You’re never going to be perfect, but here’s what you do over the course of 48 minutes… it’s a huge component of our team, and it’s a credit to them.”
The head coach lauded Payton Pritchard’s confidence and work ethic, which contributed significantly to Boston’s scoring output. “His confidence comes from his work ethic… even taking coaching, like tonight at the end of the game, he came up and said, ‘Yeah, I got to get those other guys involved.’”
Mazzulla emphasized the importance of executing in key moments, including end-of-quarter plays: “We got to stop on the first three possessions at the start of quarters and then manage the two-for-one… I thought it was good execution, gave us a little momentum heading into the second half.”
He reflected on the team’s overall culture and process: “The story is not done. We’re only a product of what we do tomorrow, what we do the next day… stick to the process of winning on both ends of the floor, put our head down, don’t overreact to a good win or to a bad loss.”
The coach also praised center Neemias Queta’s role against elite offensive players. “The hardest position against the Lakers and teams like this is the center… Queta and Vu [Nikola Vucevic] had really good possessions tonight. It’s a testament to their discipline and work ethic.”
On Jaylen Brown’s consistency, Mazzulla said, “I would expect to see something like this regardless of the environment… he relishes getting 1% better and just cares about winning.”
Finally, he commented on the atmosphere at Crypto.com Arena, including the presence of Magic Johnson and Pat Riley: “Having gratitude and perspective of what the game means… it brings out the best in people.”
Boston, now 36-19, has won three straight and eight of its last nine games. They will face the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday, while the Lakers return home to host the Orlando Magic.
