The New Orleans Pelicans have not had Dejounte Murray available for game action in more than a year, but the veteran guard is nearing his long-awaited return.

Head coach James Borrego indicated that Murray is expected to make his comeback sometime next week as he continues recovering from a torn Achilles tendon suffered at the end of January last year.

“He’s close,” Borrego said about Murray’s impending season debut. “I’d say in the next week, he’s back on the floor playing NBA games, which is amazing.”

Murray’s first season in New Orleans was interrupted by multiple injuries. The experienced point guard appeared in 31 games overall, missing significant time early in the year after fracturing his left hand before later sustaining the Achilles injury that ended his season.

At the time of the injury, Murray had been producing across the board for the Pelicans, averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while serving as a key part of the team’s backcourt rotation.
