Cedric Coward’s rookie season with the Memphis Grizzlies has turned him from an uncertain draft prospect into a key contributor, as he has started 35 of the 48 games he’s appeared in while averaging 13.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
In a recent conversation with Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, the player reflected on his development during his first NBA season and the areas he hopes to improve moving forward.
When discussing what he has learned from facing some of the league’s top defenders, Coward pointed to a late-game moment against the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he was matched up with Alex Caruso.
The experience taught him the importance of staying composed and not overthinking crucial situations.
“Just keep it simple. The biggest moment I learned that was when we played Oklahoma City at home,” Coward said.
“Last possession, Caruso put me in a box. And I was too complicated in what I was trying to do, so for me, I wish I could get that moment back, I know I’ll have that moment again – it might not be against Caruso, but I know the moment will come again.”
