After trading Jaren Jackson Jr. for draft assets and young, unproven players, and with Ja Morant’s long-term future in Memphis still uncertain, the Grizzlies may be searching for a new franchise centerpiece.

Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal wonders whether rookie Cedric Coward could eventually grow into that role.

As Cole writes, Coward has stood out for his confidence and composure despite being early in his career.

“He’s a very mature kid for his age,” head coach Tuomas Iisalo said. “I think that’s a very valuable commodity to have.”

Although Coward has been sidelined by an injury since early February, teammate Jaylen Wells noted that the rookie has remained actively involved with the group, staying engaged during both games and practices.

The player himself is approaching the possibility of increased expectations with a measured mindset.

“You just try to make the best of whatever situation it is,” he said. “Whether it’s franchise cornerstone, whether it’s a building block – no matter what it is, the title doesn’t mean anything to me.“

Coward has played 1 season for the Grizzlies. He has averaged 13.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 48 regular-season games.
