During his annual media availability at NBA All-Star Weekend, commissioner Adam Silver addressed questions regarding potential league expansion and outlined the expected timeline for future decisions.
Silver confirmed that the NBA plans to reach a determination on expansion at some point during the 2026 calendar year.
He also noted that the subject will be discussed at the Board of Governors meeting in March, though no formal vote is expected to take place during that session.
According to Silver, once internal discussions progress, the league’s next step will involve gauging interest from potential markets to better understand which cities are prepared to pursue expansion franchises.
He added that the NBA has not established a fixed number of teams it intends to add, leaving the process open-ended as evaluations continue.
Silver reiterated that while cities such as Seattle and Las Vegas have frequently been mentioned, including by himself, no final decisions have been made.
The league plans to engage directly with interested markets to hear their proposals, assess their infrastructure, and review long-term plans for supporting an NBA franchise.
When asked whether expansion discussions could also involve relocating existing teams, Silver delivered a definitive response, stating, “Relocation of franchises is not on the table.”
