Real Madrid is reportedly considering former NBA lottery pick Dennis Smith Jr. as a potential midseason addition, according to sources. The Spanish powerhouse is struggling in the EuroLeague, currently sitting in an uncharacteristic 12th place with an 8-9 record.

Basketball insider Donatas Urbonas revealed Real Madrid’s interest on X, stating that the team is eyeing Smith Jr. as they look to strengthen their roster. However, the point guard’s willingness to transition to Europe remains uncertain.

“Dennis Smith Jr. is one of Real Madrid’s NBA targets, per sources,” Urbonas tweeted. “It remains uncertain whether Smith Jr. will consider a move to Europe, as he is currently aiming to secure an NBA roster spot in the G League Showcase.”

Smith Jr., now 27 years old, recently joined the G League after being claimed by the Wisconsin Herd, the affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks. NBA insider Marc Stein confirmed the news on X, sharing that the guard has entered the G League Showcase in Orlando with hopes of returning to the NBA.

A former No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, Smith Jr. spent last season with the Brooklyn Nets. In 18.9 minutes per game, he averaged 6.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists while providing defensive intensity off the bench.

Real Madrid’s interest in Smith Jr. highlights their need for a dynamic playmaker as they look to climb the EuroLeague standings. The team has faced offensive struggles this season, and adding a guard with NBA experience could provide an immediate spark.

Smith Jr. is known for his athleticism and playmaking ability, traits that align with Real Madrid’s fast-paced style of play. However, his decision will likely depend on whether an NBA opportunity arises following his performance in the G League Showcase.

The G League Showcase serves as a proving ground for players seeking NBA contracts, and Smith Jr.’s presence there suggests his focus remains on returning to the league.
