Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell may have been born in New York, but he said his personal identity goes beyond birthplace when discussing his All-Star preferences.
In a video diary for Andscape, Mitchell explained that if he earns a spot in this year’s All-Star Game, he would prefer to represent the World team, citing his Panamanian heritage through his mother’s side of the family.
“I do think I should be on the World team,” the player said (YouTube link). “But I don’t think people look at me as like a Panamanian basketball player. But I do.”
Mitchell acknowledged that he understands why fans and observers may primarily view him as an American player, but he emphasized that his cultural background is meaningful to him and something he wants to recognize on a larger stage if given the opportunity.
“I would love to be on the World team if I got a chance,” he said. “If not, I’m not tripping. Don’t get me wrong. But I definitely want to show love to my Panamanian roots and my people in Panama.”
Mitchell has played 9 seasons for the Jazz and Cavaliers. He has averaged 25.0 points, 4.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 577 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 6 All-Star games.
