Rockets sign Tristen Newton

Houston Rockets added backcourt depth on Saturday by signing Tristen Newton to a two-way contract, according to reporting from Jake Fischer of The People’s Insider.

The move gives Houston another developmental option while maintaining roster flexibility.

Newton, 24, has been putting up eye-catching production in the G League, averaging 26.8 points and 7.7 assists with the Iowa Wolves, numbers that reflect his ability to score and facilitate at a high level.

Under the terms of the deal, Newton can appear in up to 29 NBA games while splitting time between Houston and its affiliate.

To clear space for the signing, the Rockets waived Tyler Smith, finalizing the roster adjustment ahead of the next stretch of the season.
