Initially viewed as a minor piece in the three-team deal that sent Norman Powell to Miami and John Collins to the Clippers, Kevin Love has ended up playing a more meaningful role for the Jazz than many expected.
During the offseason, Love even considered the possibility of a buyout, but circumstances shifted once the season began, opening the door for increased involvement in Utah’s rotation.
After averaging just over 10 minutes per game with Miami last season, Love has seen a noticeable uptick in both opportunity and production.
In December, he averaged 9.9 points and 5.8 rebounds while playing just over 20 minutes per night, shooting efficiently across the board.
His presence has added stability to the frontcourt, particularly during stretches when the Jazz needed experience and composure.
Head coach Will Hardy has pointed to Love’s rebounding as a consistent strength, noting that it continues to show up regardless of role or minutes.
“He’s an elite rebounder, and so those things continue to show up,” Hardy said in explaining Love’s role.
“And then obviously, just kind of his general savvy in his 18th year – he’s gotten a little more familiar with his teammates, and I think his spacing element gives us a different look.”
