Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie reflected on team spacing and development following Tuesday’s 131-90 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at the Intuit Dome.
“Play with two bigs is a little bit different in today’s game because a lot of people play with smalls…if you don’t get the rebound you still on defense and that’s important,” Christie said, emphasizing the importance of execution in modern basketball.
Christie detailed the team’s spacing challenges. “If we go ISO early, it kind of gets us out of whack because the bigs are like, ‘Where am I supposed to be?’…once you got proper spacing, now you put the defense in better position,” he explained.
He also stressed the importance of young players learning through experience. “It’s really a right of passage…they have to go through it,” Christie said, describing how young players like Nique Clifford can benefit from adversity.
Christie encouraged journaling as a development tool. “I talked to Nique about keeping a journal and…if he just makes a couple notes, all of a sudden he builds up this vast amount of knowledge,” he said, highlighting a method to accelerate player growth.
The coach praised his players’ work ethic and character. “They’re good kids and they want to be good. They stay in the gym, they listen, they do the right things,” Christie said, stressing that effort and attitude are central to long-term development.
Kawhi Leonard led all scorers with 33 points, and James Harden added 21 as the Clippers extended their season-best five-game winning streak. Rookie Yanic Konan Niederhauser and John Collins each contributed 16 points.
Sacramento fell behind 34-20 after the first quarter and trailed 70-43 at halftime, struggling to contain Los Angeles’ ball movement and defensive pressure. The Kings committed 19 turnovers, which the Clippers converted into 28 points.
Los Angeles dominated inside, out-rebounding Sacramento 42-41 and holding the Kings to 41% shooting overall. Despite missing Ivica Zubac, the Clippers’ execution allowed them to lead by 30 after three quarters.
Sacramento will host the Boston Celtics on Thursday, while Los Angeles faces the Utah Jazz at home the same day.
